Today, all of a sudden, one of my desktop computers just all of a sudden powered off. There was no "Windows is closing" or anything, merely just *poof* and it was off.

I pushed the ability button and the reckoner powered back on and Windows booted. Virtually 5 minutes later, it did turned off once again. Since then, I can not get information technology back on. Zilch happens at all when I push the power button.

When I unplug the ability cord and plug information technology dorsum in, in that location is a quick and faint electrical "zzzt" sound (deplorable not sure how to explicate it but it ever does that when I connect the power cord.

I understand it'south incommunicable to say for sure what is wrong, merely what is most probable going on? Is it the power supply unit that has died? Or the motherboard? Is in that location any way I can easily figure out what is wrong other than replacing each hardware at a time?

The computer is non fifty-fifty two years old.

Showtime, test your front end console power switch as follows:

Ability your unit downwardly.  Exit information technology plugged in to the wall outlet.  Pop off the side of your calculator, and trace the small cable running from your forepart panel, on/off power switch to where it plugs into the tiny socket on the mainboard.  Gently pull that plug off, revealing two contacts.  Take a flat-bladed screwdriver, and brusk the two contacts.  Your estimator should immediately power upwards and start to boot.  Permit it run and use information technology usually for several hours. If it runs usually that front panel on/off switch needs to be replaced.

If it notwithstanding will not boot, and then the problem is elsewhere.

If there are no responses to my postal service for three days I remove it from my answer list. If yous wish to continue the thread later 3 days please PM me.

No I have no Harbor Freight stores in my country. Multimeters cost style more than in my country only of class I could order one but was hoping maybe I could go away by solving this quicker because deliveries are so slow.

The computer that is not powering on is a custom built system I purchased on eBay a year and a half agone, and then no model or make for that. The one I was wanting to take the power supply out of is an old Dell Inspiron 660. I have taken photos of the power units inside each of the computers, in case that can be of any assistance. The first photograph is the power unit within the problem computer.

I'm going to PM a BC Advisor member who has more hardware experience than me but I would non put that Dell PSU into your custom build. Your Dell PSU is simply 300 watts and the 12v track practice not match.

I would wait for a reply from the BC member.

This volition exam very but if the power supply will switch on.  Use a bent paperclip to curt the pins illustrated in this guide - https://www.silverstonetek.com/downloads/QA/PSU/PSU-Newspaper%20Clip-EN.pdf

If the machine is a basic one (part PC, no high ability GPU etc.) then the Dell PSU may serve to test it.  Information technology won't exist suitable for running a PC with a powerful gaming graphics card.

Thanks guys for all your replies. I had a friend over who tested my power supply with a device and said information technology'due south fried and needs replaced. I was going to use the ability unit from the Dell computer only to endeavor to figure out if that was the problem, but now that it has been confirmed the power unit of measurement is no expert I decided to just lodge a new one with right wattage.
